The Jay Yogeshwar Dayal Das Bavani Gujarati Jay Yogeshwar Dayal Das Bavani, the first Gujarati writer of English Literature, was born on 2nd December 1805. He was also known as Jay Doot Bhaumik. As a child he studied with scholars like Abul Kalam Azad and Rajendra Lal Mitra at his native town of Julgah (Mehsana) in Gujarat. In 1849 he published a book titled 'The Modern Hindu Woman'. In this book Dayal Das discussed women's dignity and self-worth in the context of goodness and virtue which is highlighted by their physical beauty. This book was one of the first in Gujarati literature to deal with the subject of women's rights. Jay Yogeshwar Dayal started the publication of 'Sarasvati Leela' in 1853. This magazine is considered as one of the important sources for study on this period. The contents of this magazine included articles against child marriage and other social evils. In 1861 he published a book titled 'The Indian Merchant'. In this book he sketched a brief but vivid picture of merchants during medieval times. In 1885, Jay Yogeshwar Dayal founded Gujarat Sabha and became its first president. He worked for the spread of education in the country along with Dharmarth Trust. Jay Yogeshwar Dayal died on 17 October 1891 at the age of 86. The fountain in front of Gujarat University Library is named after him.
